Castle é um seriado baseado em um famoso escritor de histórias de assassinatos que está sofrendo um bloqueio criativo depois de matar o principal personagem de seus livros e encontra dificuldades em criar um substituto. O escritor tem tudo: dinheiro, fama e mulheres, mas começa a repensar quando um assassino real se inspira nos seus livros.

A ajuda dele à polícia de N. York faz com que ele conheça a Det. Beckett, para quem ele começa a olhar de um jeito diferente. A dinâmica entre os dois funciona com o jeito conservador e sério dela contraposto ao humor e inconsequência dele, trazendo cenas de comédia com isso. Ele usa a sua influência para continuar a acompanhá-la nas suas invetigações e, assim, buscar inspiração para a sua nova personagem, Nikki Heat. Eventualmente o seu livro, Heat Wave, é publicado e é mencionado frequentemente na série.

Livros

Para publicidade da série o livro acabou sendo publicado de verdade. O livro Heat Wave foi lançado pela Hyperion, em 29 de setembro de 2009 e estreou em 26º na lista de bestsellers do New York Times. Em sua 4ª semana da lista, Heat Wave subiu para o top 10, nº 6 .

O romance também possui uma versão ficcional do já fictício Richard Castle, apropriadamente chamado "Jameson Rook" que entra em uma parceria com Nikki Heat que espelha a relação de Castle com Beckett.

Um segundo romance da saga, Naked Heat, também comentado no seriado, está agendado para lançamento no outono de 2010.
